Why is it important to know the past?

By knowing the past, we could learn more about my and your history to understand each other better, because when I was in school, I heard my classmate say to our English teacher that she is a terrorist because she is from Yemen, and he didn't even understand her culture, so I want to inspire people that other cultures are not harmful.
